Series I Book 4 : “Moose And The Sled Ride” Author’s Discussion

In this story, we find our friends dealing with the issue of ‘Sharing’. After deciding as a group to go sled riding, we find our three stingy bears monopolizing the lone sled that is available and upsetting the rest of the animal friends. The initial response from our friends, as usual, is negative, as they avoid any confrontation by choosing to simply move on to other activities. This is one of many possible actions that they could have taken but is certainly the least combative. It also gives us an opportunity to teach the bears a lesson through a self-examination of their own actions.

Once abandoned, the three bears realize that they miss the group and admit their own error to themselves. They proceed to find the group and apologize for their misbehavior as well as invite the others to rejoin them, with the promise of a change in attitude.

This brief encounter with negative behavior should open the door to a discussion about this trait among playmates and provide an opportunity to explain how to deal with this kind of behavior. At issue here is not only the avoidance of confrontation but a method of resolving the negative behavior. Issues of anger, self-esteem, frustration and rejection have to be dealt with. Any group discussion needs to include the methods to deal with diffusing the negative aspects of these behaviors. Our story is self-resolving, in that the bears realize their own error and seek a reunification with their friends. Oh that it was that easy. Be on the lookout for any response that points to selfishness or a lack of caring for the group.
