“Moose And The Walrus”

Series I Book 2: by Ray Perseghin, Sara K Enterprises, ©All Rights Reserved

Up North in the land of the midnight sun

Moose and his friends were ready for fun.

The penguins, the geese, and even the bears

Were playing outside without any cares.

Even the snowman was smiling today.

He loved passing time, just watching them play.

But, someone else was watching the gang,

As they jumped and danced in a circle and sang.

“I’m Walrus!” he said, “Can I join in your games?”

Moose said,”Why sure, and Moose is my name.

We run in circles and jump up and down,

Then make up a song and sing it real loud.”

Walrus thought for a minute, and then thought for two.

He wanted to say,”But I’m not like you.”

The walrus was big and could not jump high

He could not run, he could only slide.

His voice, he knew, made a terrible sound,

That was more like a grunt, as he moved around.

But he could not tell them that he could not play.

He could not say what he wanted to say.

So he just played the Bully and thought he was cool

To say that their games all had stupid rules.

Walrus said,”It’s dumb that you run in the snow

And sing in a circle with nowhere to go.”

Then he said,”And your snowman is stupid as well.

I could push him sideways ’til his big head fell.”

Then Moose said to Walrus,”I just don’t know why

You say such cruel things just to make people cry.”

But Walrus slid over to snowman and pushed

And rocked him until all the snow just went Whooosh.

The Walrus was covered by a big snowy pile

And it looked like he would be stuck there a while.

So he yelled to the others, “Help! I cannot get free.”

And the Bears each laughed and said,” What? Not from me!”

As the penguins waddled around the big heap

and yelled, “Leave him stuck there, he’s just a big creep.”

Then Moose said, “Come on guys he really needs help.”

And all that was heard was a small walrus yelp.

Moose walked to the pile and looked at its size,

Then turned to his friends and said something wise.

“I can’t do this myself, the pile is too big,

But we can all work together and dig.”

So Moose just started to dig in the snow,

And two geese flapped their wings as wind started to blow.

One Moose, two geese, three friends did their work.

But Walrus stayed stuck, when they pulled with a jerk.

More help was needed to set Walrus free,

So Moose turned to the others and said,” Come on, Please.”

The two penguin friends added more to the fight.

And the five of them dug-in with all of their might.

Moose then said to Walrus,” We are almost there.

We just need some help from a few more bears.”

The bears were embarrassed for not helping their friends.

So they joined in the digging to help in the end.

All eight were now digging to set Walrus free,

‘Til he popped from the pile and slid into Moose knees.

Then Walrus said,”Thank you, I thought I was dead.

I did not deserve it. I heard what you said.”

Moose and his friends said,”Yes that is true.

But something was wrong, because you were not you.”

“Yes” said the Walrus,”It’s true I was bad.

I act like a bully whenever I’m sad.

I am big and heavy and can’t run and jump.

You can see how I lay in a big Walrus lump.”

“We see,” said Moose,”so what’s all the fuss?

We can all see that you don’t look like us.

But a friend is a friend, and games can be changed.

You too can join in the fun just the same.”

Then Walrus helped them make great big snowballs,

As they all worked together building snowman tall.

With his hat on his head and fur coat back in place,

A smile returned to the big Snowman’s face.

From that moment on, no one used hurtful names.

And a new friend, named Walrus, joined all of their games.
