Series I Book 6 : “Moose And The Flying Lesson” Author’s Discussion

by Ray Perseghin, Sara K Enterprises, ©All Rights Reserved

This story covers a lot of ground in a very short time and was intentionally left open-ended to allow your group the opportunity to cover a wide range of topics. In its simplicity, it describes how two penguins take some rather bad advice from the geese, as the other friends look on. Our other friends have already recognized their own limitations. Following the fool-hardy jump and injury of one penguin, it is necessary to find help. So in this brief beginning, we have already addressed making poor decisions, listening to bad advice, recognizing our own limitations, consequences of our actions, emergencies, and first aid. Any one or combination of these topics can be discussed by your group.

One tactic would be to allow your group to relate situations, from their own playtime activities, where a challenge or ‘Dare’ was made, or even when an injury occurred during normal activity. In this discussion, some learning points should include:

  1. It’s better to say NO to a dare or challenge than to risk a possible negative outcome.
  2. Each of us should be proud of who we are and not try to impress or go beyond our personal limitations without the proper instruction or guidance.
  3. It is good to set goals and challenge ourselves to achieve, and there are people trained to assist us in doing these things.
  4. When a problem arises, GET HELP! Know what is available for your support in the situations that require it.
  5. Do Not let others goad you into doing something you might regret. Don’t succumb to peer pressures.

Above all…Have Fun!

SUGGESTED QUESTIONS TO GENERATE DISCUSSION

  1. Explain what each of the friends did when asked to try to fly.
  2. Why did the Penguins think that they should be able t fly?
  3. What do you say to someone who ‘Dares’ you to do something?
  4. Who should you talk to before trying something you have never done before?
  5. If a problem arose, where would you go for help?
  6. What are some things that you would like to do that you have never done before?
  7. Where would you go to get the help you need to take on new challenges?
