“Moose Knows Best”

All bright and beautiful is the day

And all our friends are out to play.

Two geese both soar up in the sky

And watch as walrus slides on by.

Moose is out looking for some food,

While penguins roam the neighborhood.

Tall snowman watches while his friends

All play around his hill again.

But something new is in the air,

Because the bears aren’t anywhere.

Then moose said, “Hey guys, let’s all go

To find the bears out in the snow.”

They searched the hills and through the wood

Then searched all ’round the neighborhood.

And as the penguins passed on by

They heard one of the small bears cry.

“Hey! That’s not fair. You jumped too soon.

You did not leave us any room.”

Out in the river, three bears jumped

From rock to rock and stump to stump.

Each trying hard to be the one

Who reached land first and then be done.

Geese said, “But we don’t understand.

What is the rush to reach the land?”

Bears said, “This is just one small test,

To see which one of us is best.

We run, we jump, we climb real high.”

Geese said, “We saw you from the sky.”

Bears said, “We even fish and dig.

We’re learning things for when we’re big.”

Moose said, “I see, that’s really good.

So do you hunt and look for food?”

Bears said, “Yes, we can do that too.

And even run and play like you.”

Moose said, “But this is not a game.

When you compete it’s just the same

As practicing the skills you need

For you to live, and hunt, and feed.”

Bears said, “You’re right, it’s not just fun.

We want to see who is the one

Who is the best.” And no one budged.

Then moose said, “OK, then we’ll judge.”

So they all watched the bears, who caught

A bunch of fish, like they were taught.

As snowman smiled and laughed inside

And watched all of his friends with pride.

His friends were growing every day

Even as he watched them play.

Moose yelled, “OK we have the score.

But it;s not what you’re looking for.

We don’t think any one is best.

We think you all have passed your test.
