“Moose And The Volunteers”
Series 2 Book 5: by Ray Perseghin, Sara K Enterprises, ©All Rights Reserved
Midsummer days are long and bright,
And snowman looks a weary sight.
His eyes both droop, his smile sags.
His coat is even torn to rags.
He tries his best to stand real tall,
As daytime sun just makes him small.
Moose and his friends are not around.
They took a trip down to the town.
And as they watched the children play,
The boy and girl had this to say.
“Today is the day to volunteer
To help our friends both far and near.
Collecting things to help them out.”
And then they heard someone else shout,
“Now everybody follow me,
And pick up all the things you see
The people stack at their front door.
Then bring it here and go for more.”
So people pulled their sleds around
Collecting things all through the town.
And soon the pile began to grow
As sleds were pulled across the snow.
Boxes filled with cans and food
And even clothes, just slightly used.
The friends just watched as all the while
The work was done as people smiled.
Moose said, “It seems their having fun,
While all the work is getting done.
Because they all are pitching in
To help, so everybody wins.”
Then back to snowman’s hill they went
And saw the snowman’s body bent.
Geese said, “Poor snowman needs help too,
But we need more than me and you.
What if we asked for volunteers
From all our friends both far and near?
And then we all could gather snow
To help the snowman grow and grow.”
So out they ran and swam and flew,
As more help came and snowman grew.
And even bigger than before
The snowman’s smile returned once more.
Then as his hat was placed on top
All of the work came to a stop.
Moose said, “Wow! Look what we have done.
We all worked hard, but it was fun.”
Bears said, “It makes us all feel good.
But really, moose, you knew it would.
Whenever we can help a friend
We are the winners in the end.”
Now snowman tall and shining bright
Just smiled as day slipped into night.
