Series II Book 4: “Moose Finds A Fort” Discussion

Need I ask, even rhetorically, if you know of an instance where something was borrowed without permission and either misplaced, damaged, or not returned? The lesson here is to build respect for what belongs to others. In the story,” Moose And The Sled Ride”, the friends used a sled without permission (we conveniently overlooked the fact that the sled was misappropriated from somewhere). To further discuss these instances of respect for others, we add this story of our children borrowing tools to build a snow fort. When they leave their tools laying around in order to go play elsewhere, it is up to the animal friends to collect them and place them neatly within the fort for safekeeping until the children return.

Remembering that this scenario only happens in our story land, your discussions may include the “What Ifs” that surround the children’s decisions. What if The animal friends did not help? What if snowfall covered the tools? What if they did not return to the fort? What if their parents discovered the tools missing? And many more…

It is not a big leap to also tie in our previous story about completing goals and responsibility. The simple lesson here might be, “If it is not yours, don’t touch it.” Our readers have, no doubt, been exposed to many household tools and may have even learned to use them, ie: spoons, forks, hammers, vacuums, cell phones, computers, etc. Have them begin with a list of the things that would require permission for them to use.
