“Moose Says, “ Goodbye””

Far up north, as winter came
The friends all knew things weren’t the same.
The days were short, the nights were long
And Snowman felt something was wrong.
His friends did not come every day.
They did not always stop to play.
These changes happened every years
As winter’s cold drew very near.
And as he smiled the Moose walked by
But Snowman could not ask him why.
It seemed that Moose was also sad
From missing all the friends he had.
He stopped and said, “Hey Snowman friend,
It looks as though we’ve reached the end.
Another year has passed us by.”
Then something caught the Moose’s eye.
Two geese flew down without a sound
And stood by Moose there on the ground.
As two tall penguins waddled near
With three bears bringing up the rear.
Eight friends, plus Snowman, gathered ’round
But no one even made a sound.
Then slowly walrus made his way
To join the group of friends this day.
Ten friends together in a ring
And no one cared to dance or sing.
Then Moose said, “Why are we so sad?
Remember all the fun we had?”
And geese said, “Yes we do, we know.
But now it’s time for us to go.
When winter comes it’s south we fly.
It’s time for us to say goodbye.”
Then penguins said, “With winter here,
We have to go where food is near.”
And walrus and the bears all knew
That they would have to travel too.
But Moose said, “Hey when winter’s done,
We can come back and have more fun.”
And geese said, “Yes, Moose, that is true.
We’ll all come back.” Then up they flew.
They headed south toward warmer days.
Then bears and walrus went their ways.
And penguins waddled to the sea,
As Moose said, “Well that leaves just me.
Hey Snowman, I’ll see you next year,
When the bright new spring is here.
Then all the friends will join again
To laugh and dance and sing as friends.
So hold us close within your thoughts
Remembering that we’re not lost.”
And Snowman smiled as if to say,
“I’ll see you here another day.”
