Series I Book 1: “Moose And The Snowman” Author’s Discussion

This first book of the ‘Moose’ series is essential for setting the tone of the stories and laying the groundwork for the initial set of characters. In a very brief opening, Moose moves through all of the stages of loneliness, searching, discovery, acceptance and leadership of the group of very different friends. This simple meeting of characters during a playtime activity, displays the difficulty of this kind of group dynamic.

The recognized leader of the group, Moose, exemplifies this role by choosing to keep moving forward, in spite of the challenges. In his own depression and loneliness, he is still able to inspire others to join the group by simply choosing to go on in spite of himself.

The Snowman, who remains throughout the series an inanimate object, becomes the omniscient overseer with the approving smile and constant presence, as he monitors their playtime activities.

After reading Book #1, invite your group to discuss how they make friends. Ask them to select one of the characters they would like to be, and ask why they identify with that character. Allow them to role play how they would introduce themselves as their favorite character. Monitor their progress and be aware of any difficulties in being the first to speak during introductions. Be prepared to explain the importance of a smile and a friendly tone when making friends. But also be prepared to explain the importance of being wary of strangers.

7. Let’s review the math and count the friends in the story as they join the group at play.
