Series I Book 3 : “Moose We Like You Too” Author’s Discussion

The story in book #3 builds on the themes we found in book #2. With our Walrus friend now a permanent part of the group, we find Moose reflecting on how his differences add to to the group, even though he initially did not feel accepted or part of their team. Moose devises a game that allows the friends to compliment each other and build self-esteem. This allows everyone to recognize the others individuality and contribution.

The greatest power we have in our global economy is our diversity. Our ethnic backgrounds, culture, form, talents, etc provide us with a wide base of experience and professional talent to draw on in completing our daily tasks. The challenge, as teachers, is to show that each of our individual differences has value and merit, as part of an ever shrinking world and global family. We must remember that we are born with no preconceived notions or prejudices. These are all learned behaviors. We must make a conscious effort to break the chain of misunderstanding, as we teach and learn to accept the beauty that our diversity provides.

Our Moose Game ‘We Like You’ may be recognizable as a group exercise from other types of professional training. In its purest form, only one rule exists, NO negative comments are allowed. Group discussion following the story might include self-esteem, our ability to like who we are, our own individuality, positive reinforcement, acceptance of others, and how to say, “Thank You” as a response to a compliment.

Feel free to adjust the parameters of your discussion based on your own groups dynamic.
