Following rules, Fairness, Admitting when you are wrong, Cheating…
These and other traits are basic to even the simplest of games in our earliest years. How we learn these traits becomes, for most of us, the basis of how we ‘Play’ throughout our lives. A strong foundation inappropriate behavior is absolutely necessary to our social survival. In this book, we learn some of the consequences of adverse behavior, brought about by unfair play. The resolution, of course, is but one solution to resolving the conflict.
The game is Hide-And-Seek. Here we find our two geese using their ability to fly as an unfair advantage in avoiding detection from the ground-based friends. Admittedly, they were probably not aware of the reaction their friends would have to this behavior since flight was a normal part of their being. What it demonstrates is that, even with the best of intentions or ignorance of the possible response, mistakes are made. Any situation, viewed by others of different backgrounds and education, can be viewed with an entirely different set of eyes and rules. It is sometimes impossible to predict an exact response. But, the lesson is not in what caused the negative reaction or in the reaction itself. It is in how the situation was handled after the error was identified.
The exit of the Walrus was , again, probably not the best way to respond. The Geese, however, were able to recognize their error and lack of insight, and follow the guidance of the Moose, making things right gain. Your discussion focus should include fairness, ground rules, understanding differing viewpoints, compromise, dealing with anger, and forgiveness.
Above all…Have Fun!
